WW2 Oilskins

As a child back in the sixties I had sets of cigarette cards and was always fascinated by the pictures of protective clothing depicted in the 'Air Raid Precautions' set. One of them was a picture of a man in a gas decontamination Oilskin suit and for many years I have searched for pictures of this kind of thing. Thankfully, more and more historical pictures are appearing on the www but they are still quite rare so I was pleased to find this one the other day.

My favourite is the middle picture as they are dressed in what the fetish scene today would describe as 'total enclosure'. Presumably dressed like that for hours it must have been very hot and sweaty and I do like to see their eyes as I wonder what is going through the mind of the man in the middle?

It is very hard to find views of women wearing Oilskins or Rubber Mackintoshes during the wartime. The third image is I believe the original used for the card in the ARP set. It depicts GPO staff undergoing gas mask training and those on the left are women. The best thing about this picture is for some reason all of the women were also clad in Oilskin Mackintoshes.

I shall keep searching and hopefully find more views in due course.
