Lovely find, the PVC shimmered in away that modern plastic doesn’t - quite exquisite. No matter his excuse, I’m sure the man ran after the woman downstairs just so he could get a feel of her shiny raincoat!

Great find, I would guess that in 1939 that the shiny mac must have been made of oilskin rather than PVC? I don't think that PVC rainwear was made until the 1960's?

In the 1930s, cellophane and PVC rainwear was preferred by many due to the poor economy during the Depression. They were economical, since only one covering had to be purchased instead of buying multiple fashion raincoats. They came in a variety of styles, including clear translucent.
There are a number of films of the 1930s showing plastic raincoats, and they were very common in tge 19t0s, often sold by Woolwirths
