The earliest rainwear pictures?

Post by plasphil »

I'm sure we are all familiar with the Singing in the Rain number from the 1929 Hollywood Review, sadly the 1952 movie was not very good and obviously could have been a lot better if it had featured a big rainwear number. I was wondering if these images from 1929 were the earliest rainwear pictures and 'moving pictures', I presume they were some sort of oilskin cloth?

hmm, some of them actually look kind of pvc like, I suppose Holywood may have been in at the beginning of things. Do we know when pvc was actually invented?

They were plastic but not strictly pvc.

The earliest film with an oilskin it seems to be "Twelve Miles Out". (1927)

A young Joan Crawford is wearing it.
