Real rubber rain boots / wellies … but what brand?

Post by Deleted User 415 »

Some years ago on this forum there was talk about Hunter rain boots both being fast to wear out, some have experienced leaks, and complaints on the quality compared to the Scotland produced ones. The change of the brand to a fashion brand may in itself have raised the price.

So with all those downsides, what alternatives are good at reasonable cost?

I would think Kamik but most Kamik seem to be PVC not real rubber.

What do you like for real rubber wellies that don’t have the fashion high price and that last longer than Hunter boots?

I would guess almost every rubber boot brand nowadays gets their products produced in China.
One of the exceptions might be Le Chameau, but if they are being sold at a "reasonable cost" is something you must judge (they aren't cheap).

You could also maybe look at the Hunter brand but avoid the normal wellies and look for the Balmoral/Norris ones. They seem to be made for what every Hunter boots was made for in the past: wearing them.

I have stopped to buy any expensive rubber boots, but I am looking for them at a discounter. Last week I bought a new pair at ALDI in Germany for 7,99 €. They are good quality and I wear them daily, also in office.

I have recently bought a pair of Barbour Bede wellies and find them very comfortable and great looking, those who know me know that I am a Hunter lover through and through but Barbour are fast becoming a favourite for me, and I also find that Hunter Field boots are a lot tougher than the Hunter original tall, I have 2 pairs of Hunter field boots and find them sturdy enough to tackle the sort of muddy terrain that I throw at them regularly

As noted by Wellies247, the Hunter 'Norris' boots appear to have a good reputation, or at least a better reputation than the Hunter Original Tall that is produced now.

You could do what I do, which is scour eBay once a week for vintage Gates-era Hunters. Yes, they will likely have had a fair amount of use, but the quality and durability means they will be good for many years to come.

Hi. Yes the Hunter Field are great wellingtons. I have a couple of pairs and love how sturdy they are. Bought a pair of Barbour wellingtons many years ago - over 25 at least - and they are fantastic and still going strong. Had them lovingly rehealed. They were stiffer than my Hunters, but I liked that sense of 'fighting ' with them. About 6 years ago I bought another couple of pairs, but they not as sturdy. Mainly indoor wear for them. Love Barbour, but as with Hunters the cheaper manufacturing and materials has diminished the brands for me. Much wellingtons love, and a very Happy Christmas one and all. Jxx

Have a couple of.pairs of old Gates Hunters - one pair getting pretty perished and the left boot smothered in Stormsure, and still getting a tiny bit of moisture in, where from no idea!! Rehealed, both pairs. Old and smelly!! And have a new pair and a re-gated pair in Navy, which I adore. Sadly they only made those on a ladies last up to size 9, which I take, and it is slimmer on the ankle area but fit fine - and they are well loved and used. Jxx

I have some Peter Storm rubber wellies, which are more patched up than enough, but they do smell nice. i'd love to sniff your T &C wellies sometime.
