a small patch on the inside using superglue ought to make it reasonably invisible and strong enough that it wont rip again

Hello.
I have repaired pvc raincoats before, even with large tears. I cut a strip protruding from each side of the cut 1cm or 2 longer than the seam and I use a PVC inflatable toy glue. This glue is very flexible.
I do the same to reinforce the welds at the crotch on trousers of the same quality.
And it holds.

Bostik do a flexible clear adhesive which works extremely well. Ive used it on various vinyls with great success. Available from Amazon. Cheers.

I have used McNett seem grip glue, you can buy it in most outdoor shops, fantastic for repairs!
