Apparently transparent macs are "all the rage" at the moment, I'm sure all of us hope that statement is true.

won't happen if they are 45 pounds
at the height of slicker popularity in the late 70s the basic one color was $2.99, and the reversible rubber on one side, cloth on the other was under $15
they need to be cheap enough for a girl in college to keep in her car.

yes price has to come into it but when teh High Street like Primark and H&M had their plastic raincoats in stock (which seemed to sell) you never actually saw anybody wearing them out. Have to wonder where they actually all went

I think you might be right. they didn't wear out, and by the early 80s nearly every young woman had one or more, so demand dropped.
the stores did not restock, and girls reaching 16-18 could no longer easily/cheaply find them
