Secondhand items

Post by Rainworshipper »

Just wondering, who else on here likes to browse charity shops and car boot sales in the hope of finding shiny rainwear? I am often on the lookout for cheap work clothes as well, but there is always the chance of finding something that is not manufactured anymore, in the last few months I have found three or four items of nice rainwear.

Always love going into charity shops and going to carboot sales myself and vintage clothe shops in the hope of finding some vintage nylon rainwear.

My personal choice is cagoules, nylon rain jackets and nylon raincoats from the 70s and 80s.

Looking for Peter Storm type over the head cagoules which I’ve still not found yet.

I started using charity shops a bit over 20 years ago to find cheap replacements for the jeans that tended to wear out quickly at work and I realised that it would be a good place to find PVC and nylon rainwear. It is hard to find any Peter Storm cagoules or overtrousers which is strange when you think how common they were up to the late 1980's

Most of my items are secondhand, as good stuff is hard to find these days. I love to walk into thriftshops but I also like to buy items from secondhand websites. On a secondhand website I've found a yellow pvc raincoat similar like I had in my youth. It brings back childhood memories :) The quality of this raincoat is much better than the ones you find in the hardware store today and I don't mind that it was worn by a nice girl ;)

Oh yes, I love going to those places for many things. I have found and bought many raincoats there. Most of them were wippette brand.

I collect concertina plastic rain bonnets, and nylon 'school' style full-length raincoats, and brightly-colored telescopic or fold-away umbrellas. About 80% came from charity stores, but lately I've been more likely to find stuff on Ebay or similar (it's also more convenient). I have bought less lately because I am more strategic, buying more to fill specific gaps in the collection, but also all three of the items I specialise in were at their peak in the 1970s, and maybe after 50 years there is just less of it still out there.

I've found so many amazing (and very rare) items of rainwear in Melbourne opportunity shops across the years.

Sadly, they are becoming harder and harder to find because the vast majority of op shops are now taking themselves 'upmarket' with modern, swish interiors replacing the disorganised chaos I used to love checking out & picking through. I hate it. I really hate it.

Anyway, some of my best finds have included a very rare Australian Dunlop rubber-lined cotton raincoat, two cotton backed rubber coated macs, a shiny yellow pair of rain overalls, a pair of brand new green PVC waders that fitted me like a glove, the occasional jelly jacket and a number of plastic macs.

Hi, 99% of my raincoats are used in children’s size (from 8 years to xs) and have been purchased on the internet, I must own between 15 and 20, they are all vinyl or plastic. I always arrange for the raincoats I buy to be completely ruined and good for the trash the story of not wasting her new life in another family, and then I confess that I like to avoid them the trash, Why buy new ones when a bunch of other raincoats are about to be thrown away? Besides, I have never paid more than 2€ for the raincoat, I let you imagine the embarrassment of the things I can do to her for this price….

Interested in mason's reference to an Australian Dunlop rubber lined cotton raincoat. I had one myself for many years (gifted to me by a fetish friend in Kew, Melbourne who bought it from a secondhand shop) It was blue with grey rubber lining, belted & hooded & very sexy. As it aged the rubber in the armpits & the collar began to perish & the delicious rubbery odour became stronger & stronger. I would lie down on top of it, bury my face in the hood & inhale the aroma until gasping in rubber ecstasy, I would gush hotly into its slithery rubber interior.

Love going around the charity shops, sadly the nylon cagoules
Of the 70’s 80’s and 90’s are becoming harder to find, i think they end up going to bulk vintage cloth retailers and sellers, not had chance but alot of those Kilo Vintage sales are buying them up as seen loads on rails in photos on their adverts. I work weekends so hard to get to them but could be a good place to buy in bulk for not alot of money. Still find the odd gem, got a new looking peter storm full zip in red a few years ago. Have found yellow and sky blue in the past too. I have found seaside town charity shops tend to have more or ones near walking areas.
Lets get swishy!
