this runs in cycles. in 1974 when I started college no one wore plastic. the number of wet girls was amazing. by 1976 most girls, and some of the guys wore slickers. it was the same in the 20s.

women still wear plastic in Denmark and Sweden, and surprisingly Korea. 35 years ago no one in Korea wore raincoats. now its fairly popular.

It seems strange that there has been quite a lot of PVC rain wear on e-bay for the last few months, albeit shorter and thinner styles such as the Primark types but only on three occasions have I seen any females wearing them.

New look, Marks & Spencer and Top-man regularly have some on display here, but even with the very wet season there has been in South Wales, the predominant rain wear is a Reebok t-shirt, long thick canvas shorts and sandals.

It is a long time since I saw a nice trench coat worn in public, a wax jacket or even a cagoule. Is it the same in other places ?

Even though I do wear my rain gear out in public I would at least see one or two others dressed similar, but now there are next to no-one dressed accordingly.

Perhaps I could make some t-shirts out of PVC and see if it catches on !

I still wonder whether the vast majority are just bought by people who think they have an opportunity to make a killing by putting them on ebay at inflated prices. I also wonder whether in reality they do. Ebay is awash with topshop and primark macs but they seem to be there week after week unsold. As you say you rarely see them being worn out

The only style I saw that seemed as if it may turn the tide were the clear thick see-through short styled macs with the fabric edging but they have probably fallen out of favour as it is only periodically that a new pop video will see someone 'famous' wearing one and so they are not bothered with them then.

It does seem like nobody wants to be individual in their clothing these days rain wear wise !

Whenever I have worn my raincoats, which are hardly brightly coloured, being black SBR or thicker Black PVC trenchcoat style, some people actually do give a favourable comment or ask where I bought it from.

I do think many people would wear more sensible clothing but are totally worried about standing out from the crowd. Problem is though so many parents leave their children go to school in polo shirts all year long and very few that I see wear more than a thin bomber style jacket.

I have often wondered if I would feel so excited if I was about in the 1960's or a time when good mackintoshes were very popular and worn by the majority of people outdoors. I don't suppose I would.

I don't give any thought to wearing sensible rain gear out in public like I used to a few years ago. The private thrill of wearing my rain coats out is heightened by the fact that they are not commonplace and, also whenever I do see another mac wearer in public, it lends to the excitement of wondering if they are another 'Impermeaphile' or not and what may come out in conversation if I managed to speak to them.

What I like most is that what I see in another rain gear wearer out in public is their individuality and not being afraid to go against the fashionable convention today.
I just hope I see some more before too long !

On Saturday in town I saw a young woman, early 20's, in a Blue Primark High Shine Jackets an older woman in the same style but Pink and a youngish woman in an H&M Cream Jacket with a Black Bow design

While I obviously noticed them, at no point did I lust after them, feel the need to touch them, follow them or engage them in conversation

The thought they might have a fetish for rainwear never entered my mind, it was raining heavily and they were wearing raincoats, very sensible of them!

A few women I knew from my university have plastic raincoats (most of them were from Topshop), but I have noticed a distinct trend: they wear them on rainy days for a few months, but then they move on to another jacket (not necessarily a raincoat) and you seldom see the old one after. We have to bear in mind that women's fashion constantly changes every few months, whereas men's fashion stays relatively fixed from year to year, so I don't think it's that women buy a raincoat and never wear it, I think it's that they wear it for a while (particularly festival season), then they move onto the newest fashion trends. The shininess of recent fashionable raincoats also brings out young women's more impulsive instinct for cute clothing that they'll only wear for a few months, so it's probably not surprising that wearing raincoats goes along a bit of a boom-bust cycle!

I'm going back to university in a couple of weeks after a year's break, and if past experience is anything to go by, rain (and with that, raincoats) shows up most often in the Autumn. Let's hope some of those raincoats bought for festivals make an appearance!

Well all yesterday the Melbourne Fetish Expo at the Fitzroy town hall was a place for all plastic lovers plenty of people wearing vintage coats of all types I counted at least ast 30 of all types of plastic and rubber. Even 2 in the fashion parade one a pakamac the other a mespo. Best day for a long time I wore a grey PVC U Like raincoat and got a lot of great comments. So they are out there and are very popular with the vintage clothing and kink community.

That's good to hear but maybe it shouldn't be surprising so see plastic lovers at a fetish expo, now if you'd said you'd seen these people in the street I think you'd have most of this forum moving to Fitzroy
