The more I read the memories of members the more I think that schools were havens for sadists and paedophiles. Canings in my school were huge events requiring letters, parents approval, and only ever administered by the head. But it sounds like they were far more common for others. We did have the requirement to not wear pants under shorts, but that was at secondary school and when we had to wear regulation shorts which were not nylon. The other thing was when we played team games, and to tell the two teams apart one was designated ‘skins’ who had to play with no top on, which was very embarrassing for us larger pupils. Difficult to concentrate on playing when being called ‘lard arse’ or ‘wobbly guts’.

I think the OG post was about the nylon shorts which we pretty much rainwear material. Quite enjoying the thread and the memories we shared. It’s not mandatory to read every post and as folks chat things slide off the main topic slightly as per normal everyday conversations i guess.

Totally agree and thanks for your support. I openly admit that my primary desires are not rainwear, it’s just that rainwear tends (or tended anyway) to be made of the materials that I like, so that is the connection.

We had scratchy stiff short nylon PE shorts at both of my secondary schools (1986 to 1991). I hated them!I really like wearing shorts now, but my legs were so thin when I was a child and I hated short shorts. Nearly as bad were the gym vests, both schools had a rugby shirt for outdoors and a vest for indoors, which revealed my thin arms! Fortunately at the second school the PE teachers were far less draconian and they didn't care which top you wore, so I always wore the rugby shirt, the vest never got worn! I envy the schoolboys today their PE shorts which are a lot longer, normal material and actually look quite trendy!

Not wishing to fully change the topic of this thread, but I was also put into a girls nylon pakamac when I "accidentally on purpose " mislaid my own nylon pakamac in school. A friend of my mother's was in the house when I got home to report the loss, and she suggested that I could wear her daughter's old mac. She went to get it right away, and buttoned me up in it when she returned, declaring it a perfect fit. It was a lot longer than I was used to (calf length) and had longer collars. I was made to wear it for over 6 months until I'd grown out of it

Probably in a much earlier time than you, the early 1950s I too, for reasons of economy, was kept in grey short trousers and knee length socks to age 14. Even when I was given long trousers for school I was put back into my short grey trousers for evenings and weekends to make my new long trousers last as long as possible. I didn't mind, as at weekends I reverted to my plastic pacamac at all times when out of doors, and secretly enjoyed the feel of the plastic sliding over my bare knees when in short trousers.

It seems that our mothers had identical approaches, albeit 20 years or so apart. It was all about tradition, respect, obedience and appearances.
