I think the high pricing makes most people turn away from these... so they don't get the chance to enjoy such a coat and of course they don't know how great they are. I don't any other people in person owning a Stutterheim opal (or any matte Stutterheim). Just some ladies trying on one of my Mosebacke opals and some modeling in it. No, I know one lady owning one - a 1st gen opal which is very thick and stiff and she doesn't like it very much, beside the coat is a little bit too big for her so she rarely wears it.

rainwearseeker wrote: August 12th, 2025, 8:13 pm the opal and farmerrain materials though are not the same. they are either more stiff or not the same sticky rubbery material.
Of course they are different, but in terms of Farmerrain you have to take care which generation the material is. I know all three gens (of their shiny material), the first gen which was more shiny and softer, the second gen before their change to the current biovinyl Atlas material which was the stiffest and now their new material which feels completely different esp. from the gen2 material. The new one is much much softer and the complaints about the stiff gen2 material are outdated now.

i have a yellow retro coat from 2019 and one from last year. the 2.0 has this oily residue with a chemical smell to it but the material feels the same like the first retro coat i received. both are in the atlas material.

I know all three mentioned generations of a black retro and the new 2.0 is definitely different and much softer than ist predecessor, the updated Gen1 coat which was the stiffest of all.
I still have a Gen1 first edition in black (with the brand name on the right sleeve) in a smaller size for fashion shoots, this was the most glossy one. This is it:

when was the updated gen 1 raincoat and when did the gen 2 appear? also does the softness vary based on the color?

Oh, I can't answer this in detail. I think it was about 2016 or 2017 when they started to bring the first Retro coats. I remember their announcements on their Insta channel. My Gen1 Mk I (as I may call it) black retro from the pic in sz XS was delivered even when the Gen1 Mk II (stiffer) was delivered in other sizes (I gifted a friend one of these in a different size). So it seems there wasn't an exact date when they changed from Mk I to Mk II fabric, they sold their stock depending on the incoming orders. Highly requested sizes being sold and replaced quicker than other sizes or something like that.

There is still a shiny blue Gen1 Mk II hanging in my rack together with my newest one, a black 2.0 retro with the new soft material. No idea if the new 2.0 shows differences between the color range, but you could ask Carola from Farmerrain - she will answer for sure and is a very kind person.

I made a close-up of the mentioned black retro Gen1 Mk II I gifted to a friend - you can see some structure in the material on the coating. This is typical for the Mk II material. The softer and even mory shiny Mk I (first) material doesn't show that and the new 2.0 ist completely different.

my first retro coat says farmerrain printed on the sleeve which i got in 2019 after it was announced around the time the site got an update.. tbh i have been wearing my retro coat 2.0 less because of the strong odor. i worse PUL SU18 coverall underneath it.

I always let "smelling" new raincoats hang outoors on the balcony for a couple of days and mostly it gets significantly better after a while...
