I tell you what: 1973 may have been years before I was even born, but if I had a time machine I'd leave these crappy times for 1973 in an instant! Britain was still British then, and PVC rainwear, made from shiny, squeaky/crackly and soft PVC (it was long before the anti-phthalate and anti-PVC hysteria of modern times), was commonplace.
In many ways I would have to agree with you, but perhaps we only remember the good bits....
