Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone knows how good or bad these are, as I saw them advertised and my thoughts went to kneeling in front of a guy underneath the poncho he is wearing:

Ponchos
Re: Ponchos
Hi Saxon, as you imply ponchos can be fun as they can cover what's going on underneath them! I once went out for a walk in a torrential downpour one very hot summer day in just waders and a rubber ex-army poncho, similar colour to the one in the advert, enjoying the sound of the rain beating down on my poncho, no-one suspecting I'm sure that I had nothing on whatsoever underneath it!.

I always thought it a great shame that the rubber was on the outside of those army ponchos. I still have a couple, in fair condition, date stamped with the broad arrow around the nineteen forties. I bet non of todays stuff lasts that long.

Re: Ponchos
Never had the pleasure of an oilskin cape
By the time i needed one, mid 60s thick yellow pvc cycling capes were the thing - they were / are nice , in a different way .
I bought one about 5 years and it feels and smells nice
Broad minded enough to acknowledge we all enjoy different things:)
Re: Ponchos
I recall my first cycling cape bought when I must have been around 11 in the early 1950 was a yellow oilskin one. I can remember the characteristic odour and texture of it to this day. It came with matching leggings and sou'wester. Around age 15 this was replaced by an identically coloured outfit in heavy PVC. It is a shame these items have long gone out of fashion though it had to be admitted they, and indeed other poncho-style rain wear, could be a trial in high winds. A late developer, I sadly never experienced the things one could get up to under cover of a cycling cape!

Check out Ebay.
Search for 'Poncho Army Surplus'
Some good ones turn up and if you are lucky you can get the German army ones as these are rubber.
