Like most men of my generation I routinely wore plastic pakamacs throughout my teen years and in my case, on into my late 20s. It was only much later, in my late 50s/early 60s that I discovered nylon pakamacs though I know these were around much earlier. Newly retired, and needing to economise I took to charity-shop dressing and bought 4 nylon pakamacs for £2 each. They are in truth rather dismal garments, plain navy blue, coming just below the knee, with 4 buttons to the collar but pleasingly rustly, and also with wonderful names e.g. Skyways, Carrimac and inside one of them the magic word Pakamac! I feel less self-conscious wearing nylon macs as compared to plastic or PVC, as nylon rainwear is still commonly worn by both sexes. However they are less waterproof than my plastic pakamacs were, a heavy shower gets through them but they are good for lesser downpours.

Nylon Pakamac’s aren’t really dismal looking. In fact I think men look absolutely wonderful wearing them.
I love how they swish and move. Especially when worn over a suit, they look marvellous

I really agree with your comment about wearing a suit over a nylon mac. Shortly after I bought the nylon pacamacs I referred to I decided on an evening out in a pub not far from where I lived but where I hadn't been before. I decided to wear a suit and tie but also as it was raining, one of my newly acquired nylon pacamacs, that I wore unbuttoned to show off the fact I was wearing a suit and tie. I felt smarter than anyone else there and, with the rain outside still visible on my mac, more appropriately dressed than the other rain-soaked customers!

I recall many much earlier occasions when I wore a pakamac over a suit, from when I started my first job after leaving college, I acquired a Vespa motor scooter and often rode to work on it dressed in my then only grey suit, always with a clean white shirt, collar and tie, under my black plastic Pakamac. Rubber-lined overtrousers completed my waterproof outfit. Colleagues suggested I should get myself some proper motorcycle clothes but I preferred my pakamac and rubber trousers.

I remember in my motorcycle days having a pu lined wet weather jumpsuit I wore over my leather jacket and pants.
Always leaked at the crouch though, so it was rather unpleasant in a big downpour.
I’m sure you looked very dapper in your suit, Pakamac and over trousers cruising along on your Vespa.

In the 70’s and 80’s in Australia Pakamac style raincoats were about as common as puffer jackets are today.
Business guys always had one rolled up in their briefcases just incase a shower happened.
Working in the city and being a lover of raincoats from a very young age it was a natural progression to become attracted to raincoat clad suit guys.
Because Nylon raincoats were most prevalent then, I naturally gravitated to that material.
But still have a soft spot for lightweight pvc raincoats as well.
