Peter Storm overhead smock type cagoules were definitely the waterproof of choice when I was at school. The showerproof Campari cagoules were also popular and came in 3 different styles :

Great to hear from a fellow cagoule enthusiast. It's a pity the Kag in a Bag and Cath Kidston cagoules you describe are rare examples of the waterproof nylon overhead cagoules that used to be so popular when I was growing up. It's lucky that the occasional example still turns up on Ebay ...

Peter Storm made waterproof skirts in the early 80s. Quite a number of girls at my school wore them in royal or navy blue as an alternative to the waterproof trousers worn by the boys. I recently saw a green Peter Storm waterproof skirt for sale on ebay although they seem to be extremely rare.

A rain cape or poncho is an extremely praqctical item of clothing which seems to be gaining in popularity. I often wear a nylon rain poncho when visiting London business.
