Wasn't the plastic back then that the macs were made from called vinylite?

Here's your answer! :)

Vinylite was a brand name for a series of versatile, nontoxic, acid-resistant vinyl resins developed by the Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Corporation in the 1930s. It was used to create a wide range of products, such as phonograph records, coatings, adhesives, and various molded items like household appliances, flooring, and wall coverings. A notable characteristic was its flexibility, which allowed for elastic products unlike earlier rigid plastics.
