When Hunter first started out, they made boots for industrial use (they might have made surgical wellingtons too) so they needed to be strong and well-made to be fit for purpose, but like the firm in the film 'Kinky Boots' they turned to the fashion market when the industrial market declined, Barbour are another example of this trend
The fashion market probably aren’t concerned with the longevity of the product as they'll have a different colour for everyday of the week and will invest in the next 'must have' when it hits the market
And as said else where they do not last very long!

Cheap wellies are just as exciting as expensive wellies, espeically when worn with other waterproof clothing for that stimulating sensation of total protection!

My wellies have lasted well! Apparently Hunters last approx 6 months then crack and leak!
£100 plus for 6 months that is not economic to my mind.

That's why I buy the proper 'Made in Scotland' Hunters from eBay! I've got pairs that are 20-25 years old that are in far better condition than Chinese-made Hunters that are just a few months old.
I still wear my cheap green PVC wellies that are approaching 30 years of age and I have just as much fun in them now as I did when they were new
