blackmail beware!!!!

it appears my account has been hacked by blackmailing scammers, password and all. so beware.

Dawn and Dunc, your post is a bit vague. Do you mean your ISP account, bank account or what?
There are a number of scams doing the rounds at the moment (like the BT Technical scam). How did the scammers contact you? In any event, do not part with any money or give them any personal details (pin numbers etc.)

Always chose a good password and change it regularly.

Panic over !! It amounted to nothing in the end just some chancer sending a nasty email quoting our password and demanding £3000 in bit coins.

If they quoted your actual password for something then you need to do a full security review, especially if you used that password in more than one place, changing your passwords for everything for stronger (and very different) ones.
