Several of my favourite plastic macs have detachable hoods and I have enjoyed wearing the gamut of rainhats, rainbonnets and souwesters in various downpours. But I still like having my hood up best of all, mainly because of the feel of the PVC against my face and the loud drumming of the rain. I love watching the rain drops gather on the top of my hood and trickle down the front.

A good sou'wester will have a chin strap that ties or snaps into place. It's even more secure than a hood when it gets really windy!

I much prefer plastic rain bonnet. Love hearing the rain on my head and the feeling of it tied under my chin.

I agree totally a sou'wester will not come off your head if it has a good chin strap!

My partner recently lent me a lovely retro snap fastening rainbonnet to ward off the rain! It worked and I loved it. Had to give her it back.mawww?
