A swim wearing Hunter wellies

Post by chrgehand »

I was near the sea, so decided to take a swim wearing my tall black Hunter wellies!

I put my Hunter wellies on and entered the sea. The boots filled with water.

I waded in to chest-height and started treading water. The boots weren't too heavy to be honest and they stayed on whilst I was treading water.

Now, I decided to swim. Once again, the boots didn't feel too heavy, I guess because Hunter boots are fairly tight-fitting and so don't hold that much water.

I started swimming. I thought the boots would stay on. But as I swam, I could feel one of my boots starting to fall off. I swam further, both boots were becoming looser on my feet. As I swam, one of my boots fell off! I kept swimming, and before too long my other boot fell off too!

I retrieved my wellies, put them back on, and repeated the process several time, each time with similar results.

My conclusions? Swimming wearing wellies isn't as difficult as would be thought, providing you are a good swimming. But if you swam with them on, they would probably fall off if you were kicking your legs reasonably hard.

I'm a small boat sailor.
I've experimented to see what happens in shallow water wearing loose wellies.
I've found they slip down and I can push them off with the other foot.
I wouldn't advise wearing them in deep water though.
They have contributed to the drowning of many people.
