Raincoat or get wet?

Post by Slyfox »

I'm on a roll tonight!!

Over the last few days it has been raining on and off!
I am amazed that I have not seen anybody in any form of PVC or Plastic rainwear.
Does it have that much of fetish stigma attached to it that people would rather get wet! Fools!!!

Most people would definitely rather get wet, especially if it isn't raining too hard or isn't too cold.

The real fun starts when a springtime squall blows in off the ocean and it takes about 10 minutes for a sunny day to turn into a wind-driven hailstorm. We'll pull on our raingear, get buttoned up, and watch the "cool" people scramble for cover like a bunch of drowned rats.

I think this has been discussed on more than one occasion in the past. The lack of rainwear in the shops has to be a large contributory factor in this matter. The days when every town had at least one shop selling plastic raincoats are long gone.

Merv you're perfectly correct when you said that PVC / Plastic rainwear can't be found available to buy in any town / city - look at the problems we all have trying to get hold of good raingear with only a handful of manufacturers around and even then you have got to look for what may seem a specialised clothing shop.
No wonder then that thousands of people are getting soaked time and again !
Recently I have seen a few of the lovely Boden PVC raincoats around but they have finished selling that style and have moved on to something different now. Concerning the wearing of our PVC rainwear around out in public I have tried going somewhere different where there is less likelyhood of running into someone you recognise, that helps a good deal and was the thing I used to worry about most if a close friend saw me out in a plastic mac!
So now unless it is my SBR raincoat or a beach walk I normally go to Cardiff or somewhere further afield to wear my PVC, then in the event someone did comment I could'nt care less as the don't know me and I'd never see them again. Besides Cardiff being home to more tourists now I occasionally see whole families outfitted in the thin PVC hooded poncho style capes quite often.
Even if there were more good rainwear shops around though I still think most would rather get drenched in a T-shirt !

This seems to be arecurring theme and never ceases to amaze me that people would rather be cold and wet instead of snug and dry

I usually wear my heavy light green HH rain coat when there is a chance of rain and cold to cool weather. I notice other people just wear cotton hoodies or carry umbrellas which does a poor job of keeping them dry when it's windy and damp. I do see a lot of young girls wear fashionable wellies around campus which brightens my day. Last Monday, I saw a girl with high black riding wellingtons on. I don't care what other people think when I wear my coat around town. It's supposed to rain tomorrow morning so I will get a chance to show them off.
I think that not that many people wear rain coats because its A) unfashionable, B) a hassle to deal with, and C) there is not enough media exposure for rainwear such as magazine ads and television commercials. I disagree with A and B but agree with C.

I think part of the reason is that most people don't spend much time outside when its raining. How often to you see a TV presenter or a public figure speaking outside in wet and or cold weather wearing a fastened up warm or waterproof coat?Almost never.Schools and workplaces rarely have places to hang up coats. In my workplace coathooks were removed for health and safety reasons!

Yesterday my wife and I went to Kew Gardens both wearing our black trenchcoats. Mine is cotton backed PVC and my wife's is PU.

The greeter at the gate complimented us on being practically dressed for the weather. Maybe she is used to seeing people practically dressed as Wearthervain is only a short walk away We did not see any others wearing proper rainwear and nobody seemed to take any notice of us. Maybe that was because we are senior citizens as were most of the others wandering around.

We have always worn our PVC/PU macs in public over the years and regularly are complimented on our choice of practical rainwear.
