It might be regional. my wife grew up in Germany on the north sea and everyone wore rubber rainwear. When I bought her some Weather Or Not sbr mackintoshes in black, white & gray (about 25 years ago) she just called them rubber trench coats, or rubber raincoats. When we traveled in the UK, they were called macs. No mistake, we played with them often, but it was always the rubber that got us going.

Danish/German friesennerze had an attraction all of their own, often on account of who was wearing them. There was always that old adolescent fantasy of the girl who, after finishing her drink, would get up from her chair and say, in measured European tones, "And now we fuck!"

Being a mid 70’s kid then it was just mac, plastic mac, cagoule or rainwear.

maybe it's an age related thing , i'm 80 and to me a mackintosh is full length and either rubber lined or double textured , a mac is plastic or pvc and again full length , a raincoat is fabric and only water resistant by the tight weave of the material . raincoat is almost a derogatory term

Mac or raincoat, never Macintosh for me, as that reminds me of heavyweight gabberdine or oil-skin like PVC or rubber, which are not my thing.

I think the word mackintosh sounds best and has a more exciting description when you prefix it with one extra word like
Heavy or Long or Hooded or Belted or Black or Riding or Gaberdine or Discipline but may favourite prefix word is Rubber!

Raincoat

Maybe because I’m so used to hearing that and Mackinstosh makes me think of the Apple product.

Rain jacket makes me think of windbreakers.

Being in North America I generally only hear the term Raincoat, so this is what I prefer.
